One of the most common questions for those new - or seasoned - to using herbs, for health, is that of what herbs to mix, which herbs to use for what, quantities, and methods of preparation and administration.... whew! That's a lot of info.... We'd like to start here in simplicity by offering recipes and formulas which will give guidance..... with a little narrative here and there from our 20 year background of herbal practice and education!
CALM CHILD TEA "Tea" is made by pouring boiling purified water over herbs in a pot or jar; steep 20 min. strain.
Use only herbs from reputable sources- never use catnip from a pet store for ingestion. The herbs called for in this recipe are known as "cut and sifted" , vs. powdered or whole
2 oz catnip herb, 2 oz spearmint leaves. Mix well. Use 1 Tablespoon loose herbs per cup of tea for a child , or an adult. Other additions in small amounts for flavor may include dried cut orange peel, a few cardomom pods, and a sprinkling of cut and sifted dried licorice root to the formula.
BASIC NERVOUS SYSTEM REJUVENATOR This is usually capsulated ; a dose is 1/2 t. twice a day or 2-3 capsules ; it's nice to take two at night. 4 parts GOTU KOLA, 2 PARTS VALERIAN, 2 PARTS KAVA KAVA, 1 PART ICELAND MOSS mix very well with a wisk slowly till all herbs are integrated throughout. A "-part" can be a tablespoon, a 1/4 cup, an ounce, .... all parts being equal.
AXILLARY LYMPH /BREAST POULTICE
For one poultice, for one side of the body, mix 1/4 cup castor oil with 3 drops cypress essential oil , 3 drops chamomile essential oil, and 3 drops of frankincense essential oil. Do not use a larger amount of these essential oils to this amount of castor oil. Mix well. An effective poultice cloth is a piece of flannel (it does not have to be wool flannel, in fact I never use wool flannel, I use cotton). The "axillary " area of the body is our underarm. This is a lymph node station. Use half of the mixture per poultice. It is ideal to apply the oil to the cloth, set in place, and if you have a hot water bottle set that in place . Smaller hot water bottles are available. Use 3-4 consecutive nights for an hour to address lymph congestion, to move lymph, and consider applying to entire breast to move lymph and relieve congestions.
