Summer Programs

Join us next  summer amid 800 private acres of meadows, gardens, and woodlands for these summer day programs offering life skills, Green Living , eco-awareness, and magic, in a non-competitive , supportive and playful environment, with a focus on community building.

A Summer Hello !  And updated announcement :  we here at Gaia Center are looking to 2009 with plans for new programming, including an apprenticeship for girls ages 15-17, and, additional offerings geared towards different age groups and time frames.
Check back later this year for further information, and, as always, we welcome your telephone call to the school about programs, classes and events.

Program Location:  Gaia Center, in the Scio Church  / Steinbach Road vicinity of Ann Arbor.

Activities during the program may change with the weather, and with nature. Below are some intended realms within which we will explore potential activities:

Exploring wild edibles safely:  the mulberries are ripe this time of year, and we can gather them, learn about their value, and have fun making Mullberry Ice Cream together to serve for lunch, along with other safe and tasty wild edible foods .

Partner Earth :  during experiences and walks around the land,
we will explore how people are in partnership with our home on earth, and how our activities may help Earth , along with awareness in how Earth helps us.   Medicine Making - skills with herbs and health have been passed along to generations for thousands of years - we empower girls to engage in that tradition during our summer programs.

Learning from Plants:  here is a chance to get your hands in the organic, composted soil and learn to plant and care for herbs, while also learning how to make a delicious tea from the herb Lemon Balm. Green Living begins with gardening !  We will learn about several common safe herbs, and taste a salad that the entire group will harvest from the our local greens and flowers.

Medicine Wheel Garden :  the photo on this site shows part of the medicine wheel garden- home to many valuable plants, as well as frogs, toads, butterflies - surrounded by other wild growing flowers in a setting where deer, rabbits, and many birds live and are easily viewed daily, including hawks, blue heron, and sand hill crane.
We will take some time to plant and tend to a Wild Flowers Green Girls section of this beautiful garden, which is part of our herb school.  The entire group is invited back to see how their garden grew, and will receive photos sent through the mail as a reminder of how their summer efforts flowered.

Energy Awareness:  How does a tree feel?  What might it feel like to send down roots, or, to explore the branches swaying in the wind?  We explore creatively through movement and imagination, this and other Nature concepts, and learn why this information is useful.

Natural Body Care - we will enjoy making lotions, sun protection creams, and chemical free, eco friendly bug repellants from earth based , chemical and allergy free ingredients, to take home !

Nature Attunement  -  how to notice more, and safely, when walking through a natural setting.  We will do a treasure hunt for  precious native wild flowers, and discover their value to humans and animals.

And  ..... drawing, writing/journaling, singing, communing, visioning, and discovering what it means to be empowered, strong, and creative .

Participants will bring a blanket suitable for laying out on the grass, sun protection, and wear closed shoes supportive of outdoor walking on woodland paths, grassy meadows, gravel roads - please no sling backs, flip flops, or open toe shoes.  All materials for the program itself are provided.
